You are looking at an original, rebound edition of the
King James Bible dated 1629 and 1630. This Bible was purchased at an antique
auction in Florida. Though I knew it was an old Bible, I purchased it
without knowing that it was a King James Version, since the title page is so
far into the binding, and access to the Bible was limited before the
auction. The Bible was complete and in very good condition. I have no idea
who the previous owner was or the history of this Bible . The appraisal reads: "This is an original 1630 printing of the King James Bible. It was printed in London by Robert Barker, John Bill, and Bonham Norton, printers to the King of England. Typeset in the Gothic Blackletter Style Typeface, this edition is a standard "quarto" in size, measuring approximately 8.6 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide by 3 inches thick. The binding is ancient, possibly original, full blind-stamped leather with metal clasps. All pages are present. Also included in this edition are the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, and Psalter material dated 1629. Copies of this edition are known to be held in the Bible House of London, and in the University Library of Cambridge. It is unlikely that more than two hundred copies of it are extant and complete today." |
Though this Bible was in very good condition, the spine was weak and cracked down the center, meaning that it needed to be rebound. After having it professionally appraised, I learned that the value would actually increase by having the Bible professionally rebound. This was recently accomplished. The color of the leather is the same as the original, as is the design of the tooled work on the cover and back. The spine is duplicated as to the original, though "Holy Bible" was not stamped on red leather as here, and "King James Version" and "1630" were added at my request. Because I wanted the original metal latches retained, the original boards were rebuilt and covered with new leather. Apparently it is extremely difficult to remove the latches and reattach them to new boards. The latches are stamped with a floral design and still work to hold the covers closed and the pages flat. |
